La Regina dei banditi
The show is inspired by the true story of Phoolan Devi, called the Queen of Bandits – a legendary and controversial figure in contemporary India, although virtually unknown to the European public.
Her amazing story as a woman warrior forced to reluctantly take up arms gave us the starting point for dealing with the theme of violence suffered, and of redemption; above all, since she is a woman, the aspect of sexual violence comes to the fore – as does Phoolan’s action as a voice of female courage where oppression has reduced man to silence.
We renew our memory of this young woman, recognizing the usefulness of recounting that predestination for pain, and that claim for individual and collective rights, that have deep roots in the epic of our own culture as well.
