This feminine retelling of Charles Perrault’s fable Bluebeard is adapted from Angela Carter’s novella by the same name, which is considered the British author’s masterpiece. The work is a long account from the main character’s point of view; Carter uses first-person narration to place the reader in contact with the deepest aspects of women’s psychology.
The young woman’s naiveté and ambition, her opposing feelings of attraction and repulsion, make her the ideal prey, ready to enter violent Bluebeard’s gallery of wives. Throughout the show, but especially in the exciting and suspenseful finale, the various ways of being men and women in love are continuously compared with and measured against one another.
It is a work of music for actor and pianist, whose creation springs from a study of the roots of melodrama.
